Philips Diplomat desk lamp, often named Z-lamp, is designed under Louis Kalff’s approval by the Philips design team. It was made from the late 60s, early 70s until the 1980s.
It has brass rectangular slats and socket holder. The lampshade is made from mat black painted aluminium.
Any type of light bulb can be used. But a big silver tipped light bulb as in the pictures is preferred.
Louis Kalff
Louis C. Kalff (1897-1976), architect, designer and art director at Philips for commercials, products, exhibitions and stands. From 1929, he led the Lichtadviesbureau (‘Lighting Advice Bureau’) at Philips and was appointed art director in 1946.
In 1958, Kalff worked with Le Corbusier and composer Edgar Varèse on the Philips pavilion for the World Expo in Brussels, where the Poème Électronique was performed. In 1966, Evoluon was opened in Eindhoven, a centre for technology that was designed by Kalff.
