Louis Kalff

Louis C. Kalff (1897–1976) was a visionary architect, designer, and art director who shaped Philips’ creative and technological identity. He began by designing advertisements, products, and exhibitions and became head of Philips’ Lichtadviesbureau (Lighting Advice Bureau) in 1929, leading innovations in lighting design. In 1946, Kalff was appointed art director, broadening his influence across the company’s visual and design strategies.

A career highlight was his collaboration with architect Le Corbusier and composer Edgar Varèse on the Philips Pavilion for the 1958 World Expo in Brussels. This groundbreaking project combined architecture, music, and technology, featuring the avant-garde Poème Électronique.

In 1966, Kalff designed the Evoluon, a futuristic technology center in Eindhoven symbolizing innovation. His work left a lasting legacy, merging art, design, and technology to inspire modern design and Philips’ global identity.
